Caper Acres

Caper Acres was always the highlight (well, ok, second to Mimi and Pappy's pool) of a trip to Chico. Ever since I had kids, I've wanted to take them, but our last two trips to Chico have proved unsuccessful in that regard (why is the park closed on Mondays?!?!)

This trip, however, we made it happen. (Even after tears on my part, when I was convinced that we'd lost our opportunity due to a rainstorm.) And Jack and Esther tagged along too!

We had a great time, even though everything is smaller than I remember it.

Concert in the Park

Although we got off to a tumultuous start, we finally made it to the (very last!) concert-in-the-park in Steilacoom.

"Elvis" was performing, and though we didn't have very good seats, we enjoyed laying around on our blanket and listening to music.

"We Going To Walnut Creek, California!" (part two)

Saturday morning we woke up early and then, once we met up with the Meldrums (just down the hall from us in the hotel) we went to lunch at a BBQ place. Then we drove over to an indoor jungle gym so the boys could play and then be exhausted enough to nap before the wedding. Well, Ezra fell asleep on the way there. Stinker. So while Jesse played for a while, we sat in the lobby and held Ezra. He did wake up - just before the Meldrums left for the hotel. Oh well. Though the boys didn't play together, they both got to play and they both got to nap.

Then we went back to the hotel and got all dressed up and headed to the wedding. I wish we'd gotten a better photo of the four of us.

Thee ceremony was beautiful. I certainly haven't known Kaleb for as long or as well as Eric and Seth, but for the first few years I knew him I knew him as a committed bachelor. So to hear him read his sing song rhyming vows and a personalized version of a George Straight song, just for Ashley, made me cry. And laugh - they were both ridiculous, after all, a la Kaleb. But it was so sweet to see the two of them become husband and wife.

Between the ceremony and the food, Ezra and Jesse went exploring. Jesse certainly was game to follow along, but I don't think he would have gone as far if Ezra hadn't goaded him into it. (Ok, goaded is harsh... but he was pretty demanding.)

After a night of dancing (all eight of us on the dance floor looked rather ridiculous, I'm sure), we headed back to our hotel room for a night of Isaac waking up every few hours. Stupidly, we didn't realize until the next day that he was teething. I guess the excuse is that he's only four and a half months old. Teething wasn't on my radar. But he was unusually difficult to put to sleep at the wedding and he was drooling a lot and gnawing excessively... Thankfully, once we got to Chico the next day we got teething tablets, which helped immensely.

Saturday morning we had to say goodbye to the Meldrums. I so wish we lived closer. Spending so much time with them made us realize how profoundly lonely we are. Both in general and for them.

It was especially sweet to watch Jesse and Ezra interact. I don't think they argued/fought once. They really enjoyed one another's company.

Then we headed back to Chico! When we got there one of Dad's old friends from high school was there, reminiscing. And then "everyone" came over for dinner again. The guys all played a few rousing games of wiffle ball and we went swimming several times. We were really grateful that it was only 95* (instead of 103* like on Wednesday and Thursday).

We took a bunch of photographs and then headed home! We got back to Tacoma in another eleven hours. Yay!

"We Going To Chico, California!" (part one)

Well, I suppose the title is misleading in that I'm writing this post after the fact. But Ezra was so cute the week before our trip, announcing "we going to Chico, California!" that it became how I myself thought/still think of our trip.

Seth left on Sunday to drive a UHaul down to the Laguna Beach area for a customer, then took a train to Chico. Dad, David, the boys and I all drove down Tuesday, leaving at 4pm and arriving in Chico at 5am.

Though I was anticipating Isaac struggling in his carseat for the long drive, he did worse than I thought he would. Ezra, however, did much better than I thought he would.

We spent Wednesday and half of Thursday at Uncle John and Aunt Shelley's house. Wednesday evening Aunt Shelley BBQed a big pork loin and everyone (John Ryan, Gregory, Trent; Aunt Lori, Uncle Brian, Andrea; Grandpa Jack and Melba) hung out all night.

When Aunt Shelley got home from work, she came out to the patio and sat down to talk with us. And absent-mindedly took off her shoes. Which Ezra couldn't take his eyes off of. And thus began his obsession with her clothes and shoes. He quickly started helping himself to her closet.

Thursday we went to lunch with Grandpa Jack ("Grandpa Beezer") and Melba, then when we realized Ezra was getting sleepy we hurriedly threw our stuff in the van and drove to Walnut Creek earlier than we'd originally planned. The boys mostly slept the whole time, which was really nice. Dad and David stayed in Chico.

The Meldrums got caught in a mudslide Thursday night, so they didn't arrive until midnight at least. So the four of us hung out in our hotel room. Friday morning we packed up and headed to the Oakland Zoo. I'm a bit embarrassed that this was Ezra's first zoo trip. Ooops. But he loved it. We were all pretty amazed by the giraffes - there were so many of them and so close up! And the boys loved the petting zoo.

For several exhibits it seemed like a zoo keeper was following us around to eavesdrop on our conversations and then correct us on the correct animal taxonomy. You know, like when we told our two year olds that this was a monkey:

Well, no. It is a gibbon. Which is an ape. Not a monkey. (The difference, it seems, is that apes do not have tails and monkeys do.)

It was so good to spend the day with the Meldrums. Jesse is three months older than Ezra and Jude is four days older than Isaac.

We then went to the "welcome dinner" at a nearby park and had Chipotle (obviously; it was a dinner for/with Kaleb) and yummy ice cream. While Seth and Eric (and Isaac and Jude) talked to everyone, Rachel, Jesse, Erza and I went up and played on the toys.

MBR III (2013)

Every year (for third year in a row) Seth and his friends from The Master's College get together for the weekend (in alternating cities). Usually this takes place in March, but because Rachel and I are both due mid March, we moved the reunion up to January.
